Silver or White Filling, Which Is Best For You?
It is likely that at some point in their life, the majority of individuals will receive a filling. When choosing between options for fillings, patients have two choices: silver (amalgam) or white (composite). Depending on a patient’s clinical needs, their dentist will make a recommendation for which filling is best suited for them. For further information on the pros and cons of each option, continue reading.

Amalgam (Silver) Filling
Despite their silver appearance, amalgam fillings are actually composed of a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, and copper. They have been a longstanding option due to their durability and strength, making them an ideal choice for the back molars that bear the brunt of our chewing. Moreover, they are more affordable than tooth-colored fillings due to their ease of application and longevity if properly cared for. However, their biggest drawback is their noticeable color difference from natural teeth, which can worsen over time as the filling discolors the enamel surrounding it, leading to a greyish hue.

Composite Filling – Posterior White
Designed to blend in with your natural teeth, white or composite fillings were once thought to be less durable than amalgam fillings, but with advancements in material technology, they are now comparable in longevity. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, white fillings require less removal of the tooth structure. However, the cost of these fillings tends to be higher than silver fillings, partly due to their longer placement process.
